Playa Del Carmen

We had a great vacation in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico (near Cancun). We stayed at the Mayan Palace, which is a beautiful resort along the Riviera Mayan coast of the Yucatan Penisula. We swam, ate, read and relaxed. The people were very nice and the food was tasty.

Cami and Kevan learned (and I re-learned) how easy it is to get sunburned at the beach. I taught Kevan the finer points of body-surfing. Deanna enjoyed reading good books (her favorite pastime other than playing with grandkids).

We enjoyed strolls through the town of Playa Del Carmen, feasted at their restaurants and were serenated by Mexican and Mayan music.

We visited Tulum, the only Mayan ruins that sit right on the beach. While at Tumum, Kevan made an iguana friend. He loved Kevan's apple cores almost as much as Wilbur enjoys them.

Best of all, Cami and Kevan earned their scuba diving certification! Yeeeah!! We are very proud for their accomplishment. The scuba highlight was a final, special dive to Tortuga Reef, where we saw lots of turtles, barracuda, moray eels, and other cool creatures. Here they are with their instructor, Alessandro (from Italy)

Here are more pictures... some need explanation...

- The bad of water hanging over our restaurant table -- the waiter said it was to ward off flies. The explanation? Something about the fly seeing his reflection and being scared off!

- GO BYU -- It was some kind of (mayan?) artwork using pebbles in sand under the glass in our kitchen table...uh, we decided to do our own artwork with it.

- Chicken-shaped bushes -- they seem to like to sculpture their bushes into chickens and bunnies. We thought they were cute.

We're so jealous of your vacation! My favourite picture is the one underneath the dock (with the green, frothy water below and the leading lines of the dock above)--it's really cool looking.]'

That was an awesome post!!!
I love hearing about what you did. And the water is the most beautiful color. Tulum looks fascinating; I wonder if no other Mayan people built settlements on the beach or if the water, salt & sand did not allow other settlements to survive?

GO BYU! I'm going to assume that that was your way to honor me since I didn't get to come along- after all, I am the only one currently attending BYU. So thanks, family. I'm sure you were wishing the whole time that I was there to complete the fun.
But really, Dad, those are some great pictures!
